The ICC in Birmingham is currently putting the finishing touches to plans that will see more than 10,000 delegates attend the venue in September for the Conservative Party’s Annual Conference. The event is expected to boost Birmingham’s economy by up to £20million.
The high-profile conference – which will take place from Sunday 28 September to Wednesday 1 October – will utilise the whole of the ICC and further strengthen the award-winning centre’s reputation as one of the UK’s leading venues for major events. The conference is already booked to return in 2010.
Geoff Fenlon, general manager of the ICC, said: ‘We are thrilled to be hosting this nationally significant conference, and it is vitally important to us and the city of Birmingham that we do everything possible to make it a great success. Again, we find ourselves centre stage, and I am confident that the team at the ICC are dedicated to ensuring every delegate’s experience is extraordinary from the moment they arrive.’
The conference will include a large exhibition and more than 350 fringe meetings, using every part of the ICC including the magnificent Symphony Hall. In addition to delegates, there will be a large media presence at the conference, with broadcasts being sent around the world directly from the venue.
Conservative leader David Cameron said: ‘It is the first time our Autumn Conference will be held in Birmingham, and I am really looking forward to it. Everyone is familiar with the ICC and the facilities it offers, and Birmingham is an ideal location for our most important event of the year.’
The conference comes in a year that has already seen the ICC host the highly successful Labour Party Spring Conference, which was held in February. The venue is also celebrating a decade of welcoming international conferences to Birmingham, including the G8 Summit in 1998 and the Informal Meeting of NATO Defence Ministers in 2000.
