Sheffield City Hall events team scoops top prize

08 October

The conference and events team at Sheffield City Hall are celebrating after picking up the title of Team of the Year at the Sheffield Hospitality Awards. The awards, organised by Hospitality Sheffield, recognise excellence in service and promotional work in the Sheffield tourism industry.

City Hall is a member of Sheffield International Venues (SIV), who picked up a further two awards for its events staff and programming: Sarah Webb from Don Valley Stadium won the Hospitality Sheffield Innovator of the Year award, and Sheffield City Hall stage electrician Brian Cory won the Unsung Hero award.

These new titles add to an ever-growing portfolio of leisure and entertainment accolades won by SIV, which has grown rapidly over the past 10 years to become one of the largest sport, leisure and entertainment companies in Europe.

With an annual turnover of approximately £20million, the company hosts more than 2,000 events every year. SIV’s conference facilities across the group, which can accommodate anything from 20 to 50,000 people, include 20,000 sq ft of exhibition space and banquet facilities catering for up to 1,000 people.

Steve Brailey, chief executive of Sheffield International Venues, said: ‘My congratulations go to the winners. All our staff work extremely hard to make sure we deliver a variety of top quality, innovative events and activities across our venues, and that every visitor goes away having received top-quality customer service and a good day, night or evening out.

‘SIV is ideally situated to take advantage of the rapidly growing business tourism market in Sheffield, and we look forward to continuing our exciting programme of events into 2009.’

SIV operates a portfolio of 14 venues – including Ponds Forge International Sports Centre, Sheffield Arena, Don Valley Stadium, Sheffield City Hall, the English Institute of Sport Sheffield and iceSheffield – with an estimated value of £250million. The company has drawn on significant conferencing experience developed through the City Hall and replicated it across all its venues, ensuring that the brand has become synonymous with high-quality national and international business-to-business activity.
