 On Thursday 26th June, visitors to Old Spitalfields Market were treated to a live BBC Symphony Orchestra concert performed free in the magnificent setting of the newly refurbished historic East London market.
The BBC Symphony Orchestra’s Palm Court Ensemble performed from 1pm onwards as part of the orchestra’s BBC Proms Out + About summer programme culminating in a 10-hour marathon of free performances at unexpected outdoor venues in London.
Against the historical backdrop of Old Spitalfields Market, visitors to the Thursday’s market had the rare opportunity to combine an open air performance by musicians from one of the world’s best orchestras with a unique shopping or relaxing lunchtime experience.
The Palm Court Ensemble’s programme included popular British light classics such as Sir Arthur Sullivan’s Iolanthe Overture, Robert Farnon’s Westminster Waltz and Edward German’s Nell Gwyn Overture. Other popular pieces included a selection from the much loved musical, My Fair Lady.
Music lovers enjoyed the world class orchestral performance by taking their front seat pew at a number of eateries in the market. The weekend began early on Thursday 26th June at Old Spitalfields Market with a cultural experience in a wonderful environment
