Manchester Town Hall was turned into a Hollywood-style film set a couple of weeks ago, when director Guy Ritchie and his crew descended on the venue to shoot scenes for Ritchie’s forthcoming movie, Sherlock Holmes.
The film, which stars the highly acclaimed Robert Downey Jr as Sherlock and Jude Law is his sidekick Watson, is due for general release next year. During shooting, the Town Hall stood in for the streets of Victorian London, the House of Lords and a stately drawing room – a perfect demonstration of the the beauty and versatilty of its 19th-century architecture.
Although many prestigious events have been hosted at the the venue, the shooting of a major movie production provided a very interesting change of direction – and quite a challenge for the events and conference staff at Manchester Town Hall.
Manchester Town Hall is without a doubt one of the most iconic landmarks in the city. Opened in 1877 on the city-centre Albert Square, the Grade I-listed Town Hall now seems to radiate the rich history of the city, making the building one of the hidden jewels in Manchester’s crown. The magnificent neo-Gothic architecture of this amazing venue provides a unique setting for any occasion – conferences, banqueting, exhibitions, drinks receptions and training events.
The venue boasts a comprehensive suite of state rooms, halls, chambers and committee rooms. The Great Hall, the largest of the venue’s spaces, is steeped in a wealth of history. Designed in the style of a Flemish weaving hall, this breathtaking space never fails to impress. The Great Hall can accommodate 500 for a theatre-style conference, or 350 for a banquet.
The equally elegant state rooms provide the perfect backdrop for smaller conferences and events. These include the Conference Hall – which until the early 1920s was the original council chamber – the Lord Mayor’s Parlour, the Reception Room, and the Banqueting Room, which as its name suggests is where successive lord mayors have dined and entertained guests through the years.
