City Hall Sheffield is an iconic Grade II-listed building set in the beating heart of the city centre – a venue where the speciality is combining both entertainment and business.
The historic building has an extensive legacy where entertainment – and in particular music – is concerned, with the likes of the Beatles and Jimi Hendrix among the list of music legends that have graced the stage.
The venue has maintained its reputation as the city’s premier concert venue, hosting more than 500 events each year including the Sheffield International Concert Season, and more recently attracting prestigious conferencing events such as the Reinventing Sheffield Economic Summit and the Annual Visit Britain Business Tourism and Trade Forums, as the venue’s profile as a conference centre has gone from strength to strength.
Built in 1932, City Hall Sheffield underwent a £12.5million refurbishment in 2005 that saw the building elegantly modernised while maintaining its original neo-classical beauty. The refurbishment has enabled the venue to provide the very best standards of accessibility, comfort and service.
A cluster of several venues resides within the walls of the City Hall. The biggest of these is the atmospheric yet intimate Irwin Mitchell Oval Hall, which is a prestigious auditorium tiered on three levels, seating 2271 delegates.
The Memorial Hall is situated on the same level and includes a demountable stage and flexible seating configuration allowing theatre or cabaret seating formats, accommodating up to 500 delegates. The Memorial Hall is ideal for conferences, seminars and entertainment events requiring an intimate atmosphere – which may explain why the Last Laugh Comedy Club has a residency at the Memorial Hall every Friday and Saturday night.
The City Hall Ballroom is located below the Irwin Mitchell Oval and Memorial Halls and has a large main central area plus two inter-connecting rooms, the North and South Halls, on either side. With a capacity to seat around 400 delegates, the Ballroom is an impressive art deco space well suited for large dances, banquets and exhibitions. One of the unique features of the Ballroom includes a sprung, under-lit dancefloor, which adds quirky charm to any event.
The versatility of the ballroom allows the space to be utilised for many different things. From conference set up to nightclub, from weddings to fashion shows, from The X Factor to The Antiques Roadshow, this flexible space can be easily tailored to any client’s needs.
Complementing the larger spaces, there are also several additional rooms which are adaptable for smaller gatherings, the main two of these being the Barbirolli Suite, and the Vincent Harris Suite, named after the architect that designed Sheffield City Hall. The stunning Arches Bar also provides a space for informal meetings or taking some time out in close proximity to the main conference spaces.
The vast range of events that City Hall Sheffield accommodates is supported by a dedicated events and in-house catering team making every occasion a special and unique experience. Whether it’s a champagne reception with canapés or a formal banquet requiring fine food and wine, fresh, exciting, modern cuisine is a guarantee. The City Hall food and beverage management team are experienced in events of all size and scope and strive to assist all customers in planning and developing to make ideas happen. The City Hall can provide experienced staff at all levels such as catering or more technical aspects like lighting and audio visual presentation.
As City Hall Sheffield’s conferencing reputation continues to flourish, the venue is increasingly gaining a profile as a prime contender in the corporate hospitality market, on both a national and international scale. This could be largely attributed to the dedication and hard work of the City Hall events team which has been recognised with two recent award nominations. Yorkshire’s ‘tourism Oscars’, the White Rose Awards, have shortlisted City Hall Sheffield for the Business Tourism Award of the Year, while the Hospitality Sheffield Awards have nominated the venue events team for Team of the Year.
From the simple to the extravagant; from conferences, product launches, exhibitions and banquets to small corporate functions, management meetings and training seminars; City Hall Sheffield offers flexible facilities and first class service for any event.
