Last weekend, Cedar Court Hotel in Harrogate opened its doors to the BBC, as Radio 5Live's sporting panel game Fighting Talk broadcast a special edition – its first ever live outside broadcast – as part of the Carnegie Sporting Words Festival.
Presenter Colin Murray was taking the award-winning programme on the road for the first time, and lined up with regulars Bob Mills, Jim White, Martin Kelner and Will Buckley in Cedar Court Harrogate’s Cedar Suite.
‘It was terrifically exciting to host the show at Cedar Court,’ says Simon Cotton, the hotel’s general manager, ‘particularly given that it was the first time they’d ever broadcast it live in front of an audience. Everyone really enjoyed themselves, including the panelists, and we’re delighted that we were able to successfully support the Harrogate International Festival [the organisation behind the Carnegie Sporting Words Festival] as it continues to build the event and create innovative new strands.'
Cedar Court Hotel has worked alongside Harrogate International Festival for a number of years, most notably as a venue for events in the annual Crime Writing Festival, which takes place in July.
‘We were thrilled by the response to the first Carnegie Sporting Words Festival,’ says William Culver-Dodds, CEO of Harrogate International Festival. ‘5Live’s first ever Fighting Talk live in front of a capacity crowd, and a host of sports writers, journalists and broadcasters – it was tremendous.
‘The four-day festival has been a great springboard for future events, and we are now looking forward and planning our second festival in Autumn 2009.’
