London mayor Boris Johnson will formally launch the forthcoming phase of development at ExCeL London next week, by laying a commemorative foundation stone and triggering building work on an extension that will include a new 5,000-seat convention centre and an increase in overall event space of 50 per cent.
ExCeL is already renowned as a world-class venue, hosting some the UK’s largest consumer and trade shows, as well as attracting international conventions, corporate clients and sporting events. The venue will also play a central role in 2012, hosting seven Olympic and five Paralympic events.
The new development is expected to bring a wealth of economic benefits to the capital. An independent study by Grant Thornton has calculated that the development of ExCeL and its new expansion will generate an additional £1.6billion for the city by 2011.
The stone-laying ceremony commences at 12.30pm next Tuesday, 7 October. The event will also be attended by local Newham resident and Olympic gold medallist Christine Ohuruogu, and a champagne reception will feature speeches from Boris Johnson and Kevin Murphy, ExCeL London’s chief executive.
