From flans and cakes, to magnificent sculptures of ancient Gods and warriors, NEC Group pastry chef John Berry has picked up an award for his latest creation, Gandalf the Grey.
John was awarded silver medals for his sculpture of JRR Tolkien’s Lord of the Rings character in pastry margarine, and a fantasy soldier made from marzipan, at Salon Culinaire, part of the Hospitality Show 2007, held at The NEC, Birmingham from 22nd – 24th January.
John, from Birmingham, who has 30 years of experience in The NEC Group’s catering department, said: iI’ve been sculpting for about 20 years now, and when an exhibition like this is happening, it’s good to show what you can do and have your work appreciated.
‘I really like sculpting to this kind of fantasy theme, and the Gandalf figure took around 40 hours to create. I crafted the solider in my own time at home, it is painted with food colouring, and the whole thing is edible.’
NEC Group catering managing director, Sally Davis said: ‘This is a fantastic achievement, and John’s award demonstrates his genuine enthusiasm and commitment to his craft that extends well beyond the time he spends at work.
‘The NEC catering brand is constantly developing, going from good to great, and this has been a wonderful start to the year. With the passion and enthusiasm that our team generates, and the talent that we have, I’m sure that this is only the start of what promises to be a very exciting year for us.’
Previously, John has won awards for his sculptures of a Chinese Mandarin, sea god Neptune, and a Greek soldier.
