Marketing Manchester, the Tourist Board for Greater Manchester has appointed Catherine Walker as the new head of conference and business tourism.
Catherine will be responsible for a range of services offered by Marketing Manchester, including the Venue Location Service, Accommodation Booking Service, Subvention and the Northwest Conference Bidding Unit (NWCBU).
Catherine comes to Marketing Manchester from the Chester and Cheshire Conference Desk, where she worked as manager for over six years. Catherine has previously worked within the hotel industry.
Catherine Walker, head of conference and business tourism comments: ‘It is great to be working in a city that is so focused on developing the business and conference visitor product to UK, European and international markets. Greater Manchester is such a fast paced and forward thinking city-region – it is refreshing to work alongside both public and private organisations that are dedicated to the development of the City into a world-class conference destination. I am particularly keen to drive the St Peter’s Fields area of the city, raising the profile of the Convention Quarter.’
Manchester has been ranked the world’s 49th most successful conference destination in a comprehensive survey carried out by the International Congress and Convention Association (ICCA), taking the city over ten spots higher than its previous ranking.
In 2003, Manchester ranked outside ICCA’s top 100, with a huge jump to the 60th spot in 2004. The continued rise through the rankings reflects the city’s dedication to providing a complete business tourism package, from world class venues to accessibility and extended services. Visitor figures over the same period reflect a similar rise with just over 80 million visitors per year in 2000 to over 90 million in 2004. Manchester hopes to continue this trend in 2006 and beyond.
